The latest products, which expand the company's relationship with antivirus software maker Trend Micro, are part of its Adaptive Threat Defense initiative. With that initiative, the networking giant seeks to build "intelligent networks" capable of defending themselves against security attacks.

Cisco is launching two products: Incident Control System, as part of its collaboration with Trend Micro, and Distributed Threat Mitigation for Cisco Intrusion Prevention Systems (IPS).

Under the collaboration, Trend Micro TrendLabs will provide Cisco Incident Control System customers with current information on virus outbreaks and virus signatures. That information is designed to enable users to configure their systems to block the threats before they reach the core network assets.

Distributed Threat Mitigation for IPS is designed to let users identify, manage and eliminate attacks that are locally based. The feature is part of add-ons to the Cisco Security Monitoring Analysis and Response System (CS-MARS) version 4.1.

With its new product, Cisco's IPS appliance sensors detect threats, and then the Monitoring, Analysis and Response System version 4.1 distributes the information across the network to Cisco IPS-enabled routers to block the threat.

"The ICS takes information from Trend Micro's threat management services and sends a simple set of instructions to Cisco IPS software on either dedicated appliances or on switches and routers," said Jeff Platon, vice president of product and technology marketing at Cisco.

The instructions sent to the Cisco IPS systems could be to shut down a network service or network ports to block attacks, Platon said. "Customers need solutions that can be effectively managed within the first few minutes of an outbreak or detection of damage occurring."

Cisco on Tuesday also announced that it plans to release a new version of IPS this month and a new version of its Internetwork Operating System for routers and switches in November.

Cisco Systems announces the Cisco Catalyst 6503 Firewall Security System-a 5-Gbps firewall system with one open slot to give customers flexibility to add input/output (I/O) options ranging from 48-port 10/100 to 16-port Gigabit Ethernet or service options. The system provides a turnkey solution that integrates the high-performance 5-Gbps firewall service module with Layer 2/3 functionality and the benefits of the Cisco Catalyst 6503 Switch to enable flexible deployment of integrated security from the wiring closet to the perimeter edge.
The Cisco Catalyst 6506 Firewall Security System delivers the same 5-Gbps firewall performance with four open slots to provide additional security scalability and flexibility to add I/O or service options. Integrating the high-performance IPSec VPN service module with the Cisco Catalyst 6503, the solution enables flexible, high-performance virtual private networking in campus and WAN edge VPN deployment scenarios.
The Cisco Catalyst 6506 IPSec VPN system delivers the same 1.9-Gbps IPSec VPN performance with four open slots to provide additional future-proof flexibility, redundancy, and the addition of high-density I/O or other service options.

Cisco is announcing program changes for the publication schedule for Cisco Internetwork Operating System (IOS) Security Advisories.

Starting on March 26, 2008, Cisco will release bundles of IOS Security Advisories on the fourth Wednesday of the month in March and September of each calendar year.

This schedule change will not restrict us from promptly publishing an individual IOS Security Advisory for a serious vulnerability which is publicly disclosed or for which we are aware of active exploitation.

Cisco is adopting this approach in response to extensive feedback from customers, who seek further predictability for support planning and deployment cycles.

The current format of IOS Security Advisories will remain the same. The software table in the Advisory includes a list of recommended releases (where possible) for each software train that addresses all of the security vulnerabilities included in the bundle.
